"Ames, āmz, a post-village of Story co., Iowa, at a junction of branches of the Chicago & Northwestern Line of railroads, 105 miles W. of Cedar Rapids, and 37 miles N. of Des Moines. It has 5 churches, 2 banks, a news paper office, and manufactures of ploughs, wagons, farm, gates, &c. Ames is the seat of the Iowa State Agricultural College, founded in 1869. Pop. in 1890, 1276."
