The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, Hartford South Congregation. She leaves her children, Yvette Ferris of Windsor, William E. Ferris of Hartford, Paula Ferris of Manchester, Oren L. Ferris of East Hartford, and Willie Lee Ferris of Hartford; two brothers, Kenneth Ames of East Hartford, and Roy Ames of Tampa, FL; 10 grandchildren; special friends, Susan Sable of Bloomfield, Karen and Patricia Cooper, Milan Flynch all of Windsor, Susan King of Bloomfield, and Timmy Williams of Hartford her many friends at St. Francis Hospice and Mercy Housing, her spiritual brothers and sisters at the Kingdom Hall in Hartford and on the Boulevard in West Hartford.
