LACROIX - nickname given to one who lives near a crossroads or a place with one or more planted crosses. Or a soldier's nickname.
Joseph-David Lacroix, son of Jacques and Antoinette Chambon. He was born around 1647 and is from Confolens, Charente, France. On October 19, 1671, he married in Quebec Antoinette Bluteau, daughter of Louis and Antoinette Legrand. Widowed before having a child, he married on January 20, 1681 Barthelemye Maillou, daughter of Michel and Jeanne Mercier. From this union were born seven children. He settled in Durantaye. In the 1681 census, he owned three cattle and twelve acres of land. He sold an acre of land to the Fabrique St-Michel in return for favors to the church. He died in 1712 in hospital in Quebec City.
