The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

ANSONIA — Richard C. Stevens, 81, of 47 West Walk, West Haven, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at Bishop Wicke Health Care. He was the widower of Marjorie Blessing Stevens.

Mr. Stevens was born Jan. 22, 1924, in Shelton, son of the late Edwin and Jenny Andrews Stevens. He was an Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a communicant of the United Methodist Church, and a member of the Derby, Shelton and Stratford Senior Center.

He leaves a son, Richard C. Stevens Jr. of West Haven; a daughter, Suzanne Stevenson of Ansonia; three
Sister: s, Ethel Noel, Phyllis Farrell and Beatrice Ryan, all of Huntington; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and a companion, Christina Wood of Stratford. A daughter, Lillian Stevens Radley, and four
Brother: s, Wilford, Hamford, Clifford and Lloyd Stevens, are deceased.
