1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

CHICOPEE - John H. 'Jack' Moran, 75, a 38-year teacher in the Chicopee Public School System, died Saturday in the Noble Hospital in Westfield. Born in Chicopee, June 1, 1929, the son of the late John and Ellen (Collins) Moran, he was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield, attended St. Michael's College and received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from AIC and served with the Army during the Korean War. During his career, Jack was appointed as the first head of the Social Studies Department at Chicopee Comprehensive High School, served on the faculty of the Hampden College of Pharmacy for 10 years and was a member of the faculty of the Evening Division of American International College for 6 years. He retired in 1990. Active in civic Affairs, Jack was selected as the City of Chicopee Parade Marshall for the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1991, served on the Chicopee Historical Association and Building commission for the
