Barbara Geis and family were German settlers of the Danau Swabian region (modern-day Romania and Serbia). Prior to WWI, there were several German settlements along the Danube River, east to the Black Sea. These towns spoke German, taught a German education, used German currancy, etc. Though located in another country, they did not assimilate. After the two WWs, any German settlers still residing in this area were either killed or sent to the Golags by the Russian Military.

Barbara's family emigrated in 1903 coming through Ellis Island, and setting up residence in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio. (NOTE- Of all direct ancestors, the Geis line was the last, most recent family to immigrate to the U.S.)
