Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

News1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. Obituary
Samuel R. Dean, 87, passed away peacefully at BMC on Saturday, July 10, 2021.

A native of Pittsfield, he was born on April 18, 1934, the son of Samuel and Julia Brombach Dean, and was educated in local schools.

Sam served his country in the Army of the United States, in the 33D Armor Division and was honorable discharged in December of 1962. He often spoke of his time in Germany during his service. From there, he loved working on vehicles and worked as an auto mechanic throughout the city, including at Shapiro Motors, Joslin Dodge, and South Street Motors, until his retirement in 1999.

Sam enjoyed many years of fishing and hunting, camping in different areas of New York and especially those trips every October in Lancaster, PA, enjoying the Amish land. He also enjoyed plowing during the winter, taking care of his home, and spending time with his family.
