Pioneer Robert Gagnon was laid to rest on September 2nd, 1703, at Île-d'Orléans, Québec. It's likely Robert was a distant relation of the Percheron immigrant family Gagnon from nearby Tourouvre.
Robert and wife Marie Parenteau had ten children. Three of their adult children (Elisabeth, Pierre and Renée) died within weeks of each other in the winter of 1702-3, during the great smallpox epidemic that struck the St Lawrence valley.
Their grandson Jean (m. Geneviève Gamache, 1713) adopted the dit-name Belles-Isles (Belzile): NHL hockey player Alex Belzile is probably descended on this line. Other notable descendants of Marie and Robert are Céline Dion, Madonna and celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse.
