1854 - Xenia
Xenia, a handsome and flourishing town of Xenia township, capital of Greene county, Ohio, on the Little Miami railroad, 65 miles N. E. from Cincinnati, and 61 miles W. S. W. from Columbus. The town is regularly planned and well built, and contains many handsome residences. The court house is one of the finest buildings of its class in the state. The surrounding country has an undulating surface, and a fertile soil, and is liberally supplied with water-power, and with excellent limestone. Xenia has an active trade, and the prosperity of the place has been much augmented by the construction of railroads in various directions. Be sides the line above named, the following railroads connect at this place ; - the Columbus and Xenia ; the Lebanon and Xenia ; and the Delaware and Xenia; the last two being unfinished. 1886 - The Cyclone. Destruction of Life and Property. Greatest Similar Calamity Ever Known in Ohio. Thirty Dead Bodies Recovered at Xenia.
Last night there was another electrical storm with wind, rain and hail. The Xenia storm, however, was much more furious.

Xenia was situated so as to meet the worse results. Shawnee creek traverses a portion of the city adjacent to the Little Miami road, which lies lower than the main portion of the city. The railroad embankment rises above the general level and the stream flows through it in a large culvert. Last night’s rainfall was entirely too much for the capacity of that culvert. The water rose and at last swept away the embankment and with accumulated force rushed upon the small cottages located on the low banks and without warning bore them from their foundations. At Springfield the flood was of nearly equal volume, but the drainage was better. East High street bridge was undermined and is in a mass of ruins. Xenia, a handsome city, the capital of Greene co., 0., on the Little Miami River, 6.5 miles N.N.E. of Cincinnati, 16 miles E. by S. of Dayton, 20 miles S. by W. of Spring field, and 55 miles W.S.W. of Columbus. It is directly connected by several railroads with all these cities. It is regularly planned and well built, and contains, besides many handsome residences, a fine court-house, 15 churches, a high school, 2 national banks, 4 newspaper offices, a theological seminary (United Presbyterian), a hospital, and the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home. Xenia is surrounded by a fertile, undulating country, which is liberally supplied with water-power and good limestone. One daily and 3 weekly newspapers are published here. 1902 - Four are Killed in Railroad Wreck. Disaster on Pennsylvania Line Near Xenia, Ohio-Passenger Train in Collision With Wild Coal Car.
Dayton, Ohio, July 25.- Engineer WILLIAM CLARK of Xenia, under his engine, burned to a crisp; his fireman, PATRICK DWYER of Cincinnati, head crushed, right arm broken and both legs cut off; two railway mail clerks, M.M. PETERS of Cincinnati and E.F. MCKEOWN of Greenfield, Ind., killed and ten passengers injured, some of them dangerously, is the awful story of the wrecking of the Pennsylvania limited train No. 2 from St. Louis to New York at 10:30 o'clock last Thursday night at Trebein's Station, a short distance from Xenia.

The train was flying eastward at highest speed, when the engine struck a loaded coal car, which in the darkness had escaped from the siding in Xenia and had run off onto the main track and down a steep grade. The engine struck it going at full speed and was turned over with Engineer CLARK underneath. It is regularly laid out, and contains a fine court-house, city-hall, public library, etc. It is the seat of Xenia Theological Seminary (United Presbyterian) and the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home.
