Ossining, a township of Westchester co., New York, on the Hudson river, 32 miles N. from New York. It contains the village of Sing Sing. Population, 4939.

1895 - Sing Sing
Sing Sing, a post-village of Westchester co., N.Y., in Ossining township, on the E. bank of the Hudson River, and on the Hudson River Railroad, 32 miles N. of New York. It is beautifully situated on a long acclivity, the upper part of which is about 200 feet higher than the river and is occupied by elegant villas. The river, here called Tappan Sea or Bay, is nearly 4 miles wide opposite Sing Sing, and flows through very picturesque scenery. Sing Sing contains 7 churches, a national bank, a savings bank, 3 military boarding-schools, a seminary for young ladies, and printing-offices which issue 2 weekly news papers. Here is also one of the New York state prisons, which is located immediately on the bank of the river. The buildings of this prison are constructed of limestone. Ossining, until recently called Sing Sing, a village of Westchester co., N.Y., in Ossining township (town), situated on the E. bank of the Hudson River where it expands into Tappan Bay, and on the New York Central and Hudson River R., 31 miles N. of New York city. It is picturesquely located on rising ground and has many handsome residences of New York business men. There are several private academies. The industries include the manufacture of machinery, iron-founding, the preparation of medicinal articles, etc. The state prison of Sing Sing, a vast institution, is located here. Pop. in 1900, 7939.

1928 - SYRACUSE WOMAN, BRISTOL MAN IDENTIFIED AS FIRE VICTIMS IN OSSINING HOTEL. HUSBAND CONVINCED WIFE HE THOUGHT WAS VISITING IN NEW YORK WAS BURNED TO DEATH IN HOTEL CONFLAGRATION.
Two of the victims who perished when fire destroyed the Weskora Hotel in Ossining yesterday, were positively identified today as MRS. ELLA FOX, of 624 North Salina Street, Syracuse, and GEORGE E. McKENNA, of Bristol, Conn., who also was known here.

Identification in the case of the woman was first established.

Ossining police told The Herald over the long distance telephone, when a charred letter bearing her name and address was discovered.

HAROLD FOX, her husband, who left Syracuse last night, today, the police stated, was unable to make positive identification because of the condition of the body. He said the size however, resembled his wife and that he was satisfied regarding her identity.

MRS. GEORGE W. EHEGARTNER of 272 Dale Street, a sister, collapsed when told of MRS. FOX'S fate. The dead woman is also survived by two other sisters, MRS. ALBERT AULTRE of 443 North Salina Street and MRS. MARY FOX of Nedro.
