Greeneville was an industrial village built in the vicinity of the Quinebaug Company's textile mill around the time of the Civil War (~1840 and onward). This mill was later re-organized as the Shetucket Company and was one of the major manufacturers in area until ??. Other mills included Chelsea Manufacturing Company (paper), Norwich Bleaching, Dying and Printing Company (which later became the United States Finishing Company), Camp, Hall & Company (later becoming the Chelsea Paper Company and then the Uncas Paper Company), Hubbard Company (paper).
