Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Biography
DIONNE - variant of 'Dyonne', agglutination of 'd'Yonne', nickname given to the person originating from this department in France (Burgundy region). Antoine Dionne-Sansoucy was born around 1641, in France. Of unknown parentage, he married Marie-Catherine Ivory around 1660 in France. From this union were born 12 children. Arrived in the country around 1661, he settled in Sainte-Famille, Île d'Orléans, first on his brother's land, then on his own in 1665. In 1702, his son-in-law Barthélémy Gobeille joined the live with his wife until their death, in exchange for his land. His son Jean obtained the cancellation of this donation and it was not until 1721 that another of his sons-in-law, Pierre Abel, was appointed to house him. However, he died before settling on December 24, 1721, on Île d'Orléans.

'Antoine Dionne and Catherine Ivory arrived in Canada about 1661. The Dionne brothers, Jean and Antoine, came to New France together. They bore the family name Guyonne and the surname Sansoucy... We are even ignorant as to the names of their parents and of the French province of their origin. As for their name, Guyonne, it was changed very quickly to Dionne.'

'Antoine Dionne was not the type of stubborn worker who sticks to one plot of land without ever looking elsewhere. In fact, his whole life seemed to have been spent in buying, selling, and exchanging property, while moring his family around.'

Thomas J. Laforest

'Antoine had many talents - farming, trading, carpentry, and even eel fishing.'
