1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' In 1963, on November 22, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States shortly after Kennedy's death. KILLINGLY - Raymond Collette, 69, of R&R Park Road, Dayville, formerly of Church Street, Putnam, a longtime textile printer and machine operator, died yesterday at home after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 45 years, Jean (Jolly) Collette; two sons, Michael Collette of Thompson and Richard Collette of Dayville; two sisters, Florence Houle and Jeannette Korch, both of Putnam; two grandsons; nephews and nieces. He was born and raised in Putnam, son of Hector and Dora (Bonosconi) Collette, and lived there before moving to Dayville in 1989.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving overseas.
Mr. Collette was a printer at American Thread Co. in Willimantic, Conn., where he worked for 25 years. He was then a machine operator for many years at Putnam Finishing Co.
