1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Alfred Edward Spriester, former band director of Deerfield High School, Deerfield, Ill., and first Deerfield Community Concert Band conductor, passed away Feb. 19, 2012, at the age of 82. He was Deerfield High School's first instrumental director developing the program into an award winning department and teaching thousands of students. He taught discipline to excellence, exacting the best from each student while imparting the joy of creating music. Humble in nature and well-loved as a teacher, he never sought accolades or praise for his talents or embraced the impact he left on so many lives. Passing on the baton, he leaves many of his former students as professional musicians and music educators. His legacy lies in the inspiration, pride, and musical family created under his leadership. Alfred 'Al' was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Kansas City, Kan., to Fred Spriester(sbach) and Lillian Antionette (Muller).
