While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' TRAVERSE CITY - Mabel A. Jamieson, 90, of the Old Mission Peninsula, died Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Mrs. Jamieson was born April 26, 1915, in Indiana, the daughter to Harvey and Francis Jarrett. Mabel lived in the Traverse City area since childhood and in Florida from 1977 to 1994. She was a homemaker on the family farm on Old Mission Peninsula, and was also employed for 10 years at the Traverse City State Hospital.
In her spare time, Mabel enjoyed painting, gardening - which included raising beautiful Iris and practicing organic gardening - mushroom-picking, walking in the woods and playing cards. Mabel was a member of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church, her children's PTA, and the Civil Defense.
Mabel is survived by her sons, Calvin (Verla) Jamieson and Elmer (Farrell) Jamieson, both of Traverse City; daughters, Judith A. (Ed) Eckart of Paola, Kansas, and Janice (David) Guest of...Read MORE...
