Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. SOUTHBRIDGE - Alfred J. Lippe, 51, of 39 Old Sturbridge Rd., died early yesterday in Harrington Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He leaves his wife, Mary L. (Wiegmann) Lippe; two sons, Keith and Kirk Lippe, both of Cartaret, N.J.; his father, Romeo A. Lippe of Webster; a
Brother: , Francis Lippe of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a
Sister: , Linda Moore; and three grandchildren.

He was born in Southbridge, a son of Mr. Lippe and the late Katherine (Sirois) Lippe.

He was employed at the A and M Tool and Die Co.

Mr. Lippe was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club.

The funeral will be held Monday from Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St.

Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

SOUTHBRIDGE - Romeo A. Lippe, 77, formerly of 43 Highland Ave., died Saturday night in Webster Manor Nursing Home, 745 School St., Webster, after a long illness.

His wife, Katherine (Sirois) Lippe, died in 1980. He leaves a son, Francis Lippe of Palm Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Moore; and four grandchildren. He was born in Southbridge, son of John B. and Lydia (Chabout) Lippe, and lived several years in Quinebaug before moving to Webster several years ago.

Mr. Lippe was a die maker for many years at American Optical Corp. before he retired. He was also a caterer for many years, both self-employed and with Mezza Luna Caterers in Rhode Island. Mr. Lippe was a member of the American Optical Quarter-Century Club, and a life member of Hamilton Rod & Gun Club in Sturbridge. He was a drum major for many years with the former Spectown Drum & Bugle Corps.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Daniel T.
