Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Lionel Romeo Rapanault, Sr., 95, passed peacefully into eternity on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at his home of sixty one years in West Haven, CT surrounded by his loving family.

Born on September 27, 1912 in Southbridge, MA to Joseph and Elizabeth (Renaud) Rapanault, he was predeceased by his "Dutchess" and wife of 55 years, Rachel Gabrielle Pariseau Rapanault. He leaves four children, Lionel R., Jr. of Branford, CT, Suzanne (John) Rapanault Patry of West Haven, CT, Paul (Francind) Rapanault of North Branford, CT and Marc (Vicki) Rapanault of Wallingford, CT six grandchildren, Janet Patry of New York City, Beth (Edwin) Patry Amoro of West Haven, CT, Nicholas Eckert of Middletown, CT, Rebecca (Jonathan) Rapanault Reeve of Hamden, CT, William Rapanault of North Branford, CT and Elizabeth (Nicholas) Rapanault Leonard of Wallingford, CT.
