Germain Doucet “Dit Sieur de LaVerdure” Doucet; Many records point to Marie Bourgeois as the first wife of Germain Doucet and the mother of Marguerite and Pierre, Stephen A. White [SAW] contradicts it. SPOUSE UNKNOWN. He states that Germain did, however, remarry before 1654 to UNKNOWN. According to Stephen A. White, the name of the wife or wives of Germain has never been known. Several early writers, such as Bona Arsenault, Histoire et Genealogie des Acadiens, and Adrien Bergeron, Le Grand Arrangement des Acadiens au Quebec, have stated that the wife was Marie Bourgeios, given the documented fact that Germain Doucet and Jacques (Jacob) Bourgeois were brothers-in-law. In his notes, Stephen A. White states: “It is not possible that the mother of the children of Germain Doucet is a sister of Jacques Bourgeois’ wife, as certain authors have proposed, given that the in-laws of Jacques Bourgeois didn’t get married until 1627. RESEARCH CONTEXT

Québec Genealogy Notes

Helpful background for understanding names and places that may appear in Germain's Québec records.

What is a "dit/dite" Name?

When the first settlers came to Québec from France, it was a custom to add a "dit" nickname to the surname. The English translation of "dit" is "said." Colonists of Nouvelle France used dit names as distinguishers. A settler might use one to differentiate a branch of the family from siblings, sometimes choosing a name connected with the place to which the family had relocated.

A dit name could also result from a casual adoption or from honoring the family that had raised someone. In other cases it identified the town or village in France from which the person originated. The custom ended around 1900, when people increasingly used only one name, either the dit nickname or the original surname.
