1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Leonard H. 'Joe' Snide, 78, of Rouses Point, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.. He was born Jan. 13, 1933, in Mooers Forks to Wilfred and Dorothy (Willette) Snide.. Leonard married Anita LaBare and together they raised nine children.. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mooers and the American Legion in Champlain. He greatly enjoyed watching WWE wrestling and was an avid fan.. Mr. Snide worked for several local businesses, R. Deso, 3J Fuels and Meseck Logging, all located in Champlain, and George LaValley Mail Truck Service in Mooers.. He is survived by his wife, Anita Snide, of Rouses Point; his son, Leonard Snide of Plattsburgh and his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sandra Snide of Mooers; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemary (Peggy) and Rodney Ducharme of Rouses Point, Theresa and Ricky Mesec of Champlain, Sharleen Snide of Mooers, Shirley Snide of Rouses Point, Carol and Richard Gokey of Rouses Point...Read MORE...
