Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Charles LEMOINE (LEMOYNE) was the child of Pierre LEMOINE (LEMOYNE) and Judith DUCHESNE



Charles Lemoyne - Was born on December 10, 1656 and died on June 07, 1729 in Montreal. He married Claude-Elisabeth Souart and the couple had eight children. She died on September 15, 1724 and Charles would then marry Marguerite Legardeur.

Jacques Lemoyne - Was born on April 16, 1659 and died on December 03, 1690 in Montreal. He married Jeanne Caron and the couple had three children.

Pierre Lemoyne - Was born on July 20, 1661 in Montreal and died on July 09, 1706 in San Cristobel, Havanna, Cuba. He married Marie-Therese Pollet and the couple had five children.

Paul Lemoyne - Was born on December 15, 1663 and died on March 21, 1704. He married Marie-Madeleine Dupont and Gabrielle-Francoise Aubert.

Francois Lemoyne - Was born on March 10, 1665 in Montreal and died on June 07, 1691; shot in an encounter with a group of Onneyouts at Repentigny.

Joseph Lemoyne - Was born on July 22, 1668 in Montreal. He returned to France where he became the Governor of Rochefort, dying there on September 12, 1734. He married Marie-Elisabeth Heron and the couple had two children.

Francoise-Marie Lemoyne - Was born on September 22, 1670 and died on September 21, 1687 in Montreal.

Infant Lemoyne - Was born on October 02, 1672 and died the same day in Montreal.

Catherine-Jeanne Lemoyne - Was born on November 15, 1675 in Montreal and died unknown. She married Pierre-Jacques Payan and the couple hafd five children.

Louis Lemoyne - Was born on January 04, 1676 in Montreal and died on October 04, 1694; killed in Battle with the English at Fort Nelson, Hudson Bay.

Marie-Anne Lemoyne - Was born on August 13, 1678 and died unknown in Montreal. She married Jean-Baptiste Boulet.

Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne - Was born on February 23, 1679 in Montreal and died on March 07, 1767 in Paris, France.

Gabriel Lemoyne - Was born on November 13, 1681 and died on November 24, 1701 in Montreal.

Antoine Lemoyne - Was born on July 07, 1683 in Montreal and died on March 24, 1752 in Rochefort, France.
