In 1790 R.J. Leonard's parents died in a Cholera Epidemic in New York City. RJ Leonard had 2 other siblings, Effie, a new born, and Abraham. Friends took care of the children. Susan McCoy, the children's grandmother sailed across the Atlantic to take care of the children. They also had a relative who came to Westchester County, NY from Bermuda. During the War of 1812 RJ Leonard was 1st mate on an American merchant ship. Off the coast of France the British HMS Achille captured the American merchant ship and its crew. RJ Leonard was put in a British Prison (per a British 19th century log book). The prison was SE of London. RJ Leonard (there were 2 in the same family. Robert Jackson Leonard (born about 1783 - died about 1813) and Abraham and Catherine Harriot Leonard's son (about 1815-1902). - The 2nd RJ Leonard is buried in Tarrytown, NY in the Old Dutch Churchyard.
