1779 - British troops under General Tryon raid New Haven, Fairfield and Norwalk.
[After first invading New Haven, followed by Fairfield] the British return to Connecticut late on July 11, landing at Norwalk during the night. They easily disperse some local 50 militia, killing 4 and wounding 7, and then destroy several ships, some 100 barns and storehouses, and 130 homes before rejoining their ships and returning to Huntington [N.Y.]. There Clinton [British commander in North America Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton] orders them to return to New York City. Tyron [New York Governor, British Major General William Tyron] reports total British losses in the operation at 26 killed, 90 wounded, and 32 missing.
