Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Biography
MOREAU – Contraction of Morineau, nickname given to an individual with a more or less dark complexion, in reference to the Moorish people, encountered during the crusades. Also, from the Latin 'Maurellus', from Maurus which means the Mauritanian, again the nickname of a dark-skinned individual. Finally, can come from the name of several localities in France.

Jean Moreau-Lagrange was born around 1635 in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France. Son of Jean Moreau and Jeanne Doucet, he married Anne Couture, daughter of Jacques Couture and Marie Chevalier, on November 12, 1665 in Château-Richer. From their union were born 8 children. He settled in 1663 on Île d'Orléans. In 1681, he owns 6 arpents of land. He died on March 13, 1704 and was buried the next day on Île d'Orléans.
