Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, USA. She was the daughter of Edwin and Amy Earhart and had a younger sister named Grace Muriel. Amelia spent much of her childhood in the Midwest, where her adventurous spirit began to emerge.
Amelia had a relatively unconventional upbringing for a young girl in the early 20th century. Her parents supported her interests and encouraged her to pursue her passions. In 1917, Amelia attended Ogontz School in Pennsylvania, and later, she enrolled in Columbia University in New York City but left without completing her degree.
Her interest in aviation was sparked in December 1920 when she, along with her father, visited an airfield in Long Beach, California. There, she took a short plane ride with pilot Frank Hawks, and from that moment, she was hooked on flying.

New York, May 21. (AP) - Word was received here this afternoon that Mrs. Putnam had taken off in her own plane for London.
Culmore, Ireland, May 21 (AP) Amelia Earhart Putnam brought down her read and gold monoplane in a field near here this afternoon and became the first woman ever to fly the Atlantic alone.
She landed on this side of the ocean five years to the day after Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh arrived in Paris successfully completing the first solo flight across the Atlantic by a man.
'I've don it!' Mrs. Putnam exclaimed when she got out of her ship.
She had intended to go to Paris but it was necessary to cut the flight short because her exhaust manifold had burned out and the gasoline line was broken causing a little leakage.

More than a thousand persons, several hundred of them school children, crowded into the Hall of Representatives, blocked the aisles and all but hung from the ornate chandeliers to see and hear the world's premiere aviatrix when she addressed the Vermont general assembly.
They were the converts-that is, all except a handful who admitted rather shamefacedly they wouldn't ride in an airplane under any circumstances.
