Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Biography
François CHAGNON (1640 - ca 1693) — Catherine CHARRON (1666 - 1746)

Pioneer François Chagnon was baptized this day, July 8th, 1640, at La Haye-Descartes, France.
François Chagnon dit Larose arrived in New France around 1665. He married the much younger Catherine Charron in 1679. On the 1681 census François is identified as a cardeur (wool-carder).

Catherine was the eldest daughter of Pierre Charron and Catherine Pillat (Pillard). Pillat was a fille-du-roi with a most unusual DNA (mtDNA) signature. Some early researches suggested she was of Native American descent, but most now believe 'she was descended from a woman brought [to Europe] from Siberia.'

François and Catherine had six children. François was deceased when their last child (Raymond) was born. Daughter Angélique married François Benoît dit Livernois in 1711; Benoît had been a participant in Cadillac's 1701 convoy to Détroit.
The late Québécois businessman André Chagnon, founder of Vidéotron, is a descendant....Read MORE...
