DUPUIS - several origins: alteration of the agglutination of 'du Puits', derived from 'le Puits', the name of several localities in France. Or, de Puy, from the Latin 'podium' which means 'base' and represents a rocky height of volcanic origin. Or also, nickname given to the one whose house has or is close to a communal well.
Gilbert-Charles Dupuis-Gilbert was born around 1708 in Rosnay, Indre, France. Son of Gilbert Dupuis and Françoise Petitjean-Petit, he married Marie-Jeanne Brunet, daughter of Jean-Baptiste and Marie-Angélique Sédilot-Montreuil, on November 13, 1741 in Ste-Foy. The couple have 10 children. We do not know the precise date of the arrival in the country of this pioneer who exercises the profession of fake-saunier. In 1738, his name appeared on the list of patients hospitalized at the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec. Around 1743, we find him in St-Joseph-de-Beauce where he settled. He died on November 28, 1767 and was buried three days later in St-Joseph-de-Beauce.
