Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. STURBRIDGE - Irene L. (Abrahamson) Kruegar, 77, of 1 Kelly Road died yesterday in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge, after she was stricken ill at her home.

She leaves her husband, Chester L. Kruegar and a son, Chester L. Kruegar Jr. of Webster. Mr. and Mrs. Kruegar observed their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 14. She was born in Southbridge, daughter of Frank W. and Nettie A. (Webster) Abrahamson, and lived here many years.

Mrs. Kruegar worked for 15 years in the accounting office at Old Sturbridge Village, retiring in 1978. She previously worked for more than 25 years at American Optical Corp. in Southbridge.

Mrs. Kruegar was a member of First United Methodist Church in Southbridge and American Optical Quarter Century Club. She graduated from the former Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge and Becker Junior College in Worcester.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
