What is a "dit/dite" Name?

When the first settlers came to Québec from France, it was a custom to add a "dit" nickname to the surname. The English translation of "dit" is "said." Colonists of Nouvelle France used dit names as distinguishers. A settler might use one to differentiate a branch of the family from siblings, sometimes choosing a name connected with the place to which the family had relocated.

A dit name could also result from a casual adoption or from honoring the family that had raised someone. In other cases it identified the town or village in France from which the person originated. The custom ended around 1900, when people increasingly used only one name, either the dit nickname or the original surname.

Biography
DUPUIS - several origins: alteration of the agglutination of 'du Puits', derived from 'le Puits', the name of several localities in France. Or, de Puy, from the Latin 'podium' which means 'base' and represents a rocky height of volcanic origin. Or also, nickname given to the one whose house has or is close to a communal well.

Pierre Dupuis-St-Michel was born around 1677 in Bordeaux, Gironde, France. Son of Élie Dupuis and Marie Guérin, he married the widow of Jean Bartody-Savoyard, Marie-Anne Poirier, daughter of Michel and Jeanne Rigaud, on June 1, 1713 in Montreal. From this union were born 8 children. The couple's first child, a daughter, was born outside of wedlock, the birth having taken place in November 1712. This troop sergeant settled in Quebec. Little is known of his life. He died on May 16, 1745 and was buried the next day in Quebec.
