1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

James Wiknik, 50;

Of Higganum

James Wiknik of Brainard Hill Road, Higganum, died Thursday at Middlesex Hospital. He was 50.

He was born in Middletown. He was the third generation of farmers and operated the Wiknik family farm in Higganum.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Nedza Wiknik; a son, Daniel Wiknik of Newington; two daughters, Brenda Zambrello of Middletown and Amy Jane Wiknik of Higganum; a brother, Henry Wiknik of Middletown; and two sisters, Judy Quinn of Higganum and Christine Judd of Haddam.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chester.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
