My mother was in the Maine Medical for several weeks. She'd been having what she thought were gas pains and it turned out to be "mini heart attacks' per the doctor. Near the end the doctor told me that if my mother so much as sneezed hard she could pass. She had been a smoker most of her life, as was my father and most of the family. It was hard watching her go through so much at the end. When I was a little girl I threw away an entire carton of cigarettes. She came to me and said, "I know what you did, and they're very expensive. I wish you hadn't done that. But I know why you did it and I'm asking you to please don't do it again. I'm only going to go out and buy more." she always laughed at her joke about being cremated so she could have one last smoke. Not funny then...not funny now.
