The founding of Fort Pontchartrain at le detroit
Jacques Viger 1673-1715 was a master carpenter and boat builder. He was chosen to be a member of the crew on Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac's expedition to establish a fort on the le detroit (the straight) between Lake Erie and Lake St Clair for defense against the British. The expedition left Montreal in early June 1701 going north on the Ottawa river to the Malawa river to Lake Nippissing then the French river to Georgian Bay, then south on Lake Huron, the St. Clair river and Lake St. Clair to the Detroit river. The expedition arrived at Grosse Ile in the Detroit river on 23 July 1701 and camped there that night. The next day the expedition went north a short distance to the site chosen for the new fort (Present day Detroit).

event and has a list of the crew members.
