Dorothea Ann Spriester (nee Zarbock), 79, of Deerfield, Ill., died March 15, 2009. She is survived by her husband, Alfred, of 57 years; sons, Ron (Sharon) and Bart (Mary); daughters, Pam (Paul) Bell, Sandy (Carl) Markowitz, Laurie (Russ) Davis and Terri (George) Gibson; 13 grandchildren; brother Floyd (Nancy); and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Dorothea Zarbock; brother, Roy; and sisters, Dorma Bartlett and Naomi Shroeter. Dorothy was born and raised in Wheaton, Ill., and baptized and confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wheaton. Dorothy was recognized as a champion twirler and a member of the Joliet All Star Twirling Club and twirled for the Naperville City Band. She attended the Wheaton public schools playing French horn and leading the marching band as drum majorette for three years, graduating from Wheaton High School in 1947. She was a charter member of the Chicago Youth Orchestra and studied under Max Pottag, horn player with the Chicago Symphony. She continued her education on a music scholarship at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill,, studying under Phil Farkas, and graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. She was an alumna of Chi Omega, Xi Chapter. In 1951, she married Alfred Spriester and resided in Ft. Sheridan for three years while her husband was a member of the 5th Army Band. A resident of Deerfield for over 47 years, Dorothy was very active with Zion Lutheran Church. She was a very active member of the church and contributed to many of the church's ministries including the Worship & Music Committee, Altar Guild, Bell Choir, and Circle Coordinator. Music was always a part of Dorthea's life. She was a music teacher in the public schools and continued to teach French horn students privately. Dorothy was a member of several bands and orchestras including Lake Forest Symphony, Northshore Concert Band and Deerfield Community Band. She was most proud of instilling the joy of music to her six children, who played musical instruments throughout their school years, and was able to experience the joy of music. Her hobbies included music, painting, gardening, genealogy and grandchildren. Dorothy will be missed deeply by everyone whose life she touched. She was a very loving, giving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. "We will dearly miss her patience, generosity, love and wisdom." Visitation was at Kelley and Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Road, Highland Park, Ill. Services were held at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at Zion Lutheran Church, 10 Deerfield Road, Deerfield, Ill. Interment was at Wheaton Cemetery, 1209 Warrenville Road, Wheaton, Ill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 10 Deerfield Road, Deerfield, IL 60015.
