"Jean, a merchant, received a land grant below the Faveral River on June 01, 1649, but he preferred to settle in Montreal. He signed his name there on 6 July 1651 and promised with Jacques Picot, to settle on the island, and became a grantee on January 23/ 24, 1654. Jean was attracted to the trading in which he was a success. However, he couldn't resist the rich profit he could make from selling "fire water" to the Indians, which was forbidden. He was convicted more than once for this offense. Due to a scandalous moral charge, Jean was banished from Montreal three years later. Jean went to Trois-Rivières where his sentence was revoked two years later. He then made his atonement by having Masses said at a church where they are still being said today. After this time, he led an exemplary life, and was a church warden in 1672. In the 1667 census, Jean was 33 years old, and his wife Marguerite was 24, and they had three children, Jean (6), Joseph (3), and Jacques (1), along with four head of cattle, and 19 arpents of cultivated land. In the 1681 census, Jean was 45 years old, Marguerite was 30 and they had the following children: Jean (20), Joseph (18), Jacques (15), Marie (11), Marguerite (8), Francoise (5), Gabriel (2) Angelique (1 month), with two muskets, seven head of livestock, and 25 arpents of cultivated land. On November 30, 1685, Jean left his usual home at Longue-Pointe for Montreal, on business. While staying at his townhouse there, Jean was found murdered. After several investigations with no results, the case was closed. Nothing more was found as to the circumstances that led to Jean's murder.
