Bellows Falls, June 3. - A shifting engine, Bristol No. 1, of the Rutland railroad, when going around the curve near the toll bridge across the falls of the Connecticut river, struck a broken rail, and went off the track and just escaped going off the steep embankment on to the rocks in the river below.

Brakeman John Keefe and Yardmaster W. W. Dodge jumped, but the engineer, David Keefe and the fireman, George Lavallee, hadn't time. None of the men were injured, but they had a narrow escape from death.
