Obituary

WORCESTER – George William Richardson Sr., 78, of 728 Minister Brook Road, Worcester, died at his home on Monday, Feb. 6, 2006.

George was born on July 3, 1927, to M. Paul and Kate (Witham) Richardson at their home on Minister Brook Road where George lived the rest of his life. George attended the one-room school house on Minister Brook Road. He worked on the family farm and took over running the farm after his father became disabled in 1951. He had a lifelong career as a farmer.

George met Jean Elizabeth Bavier at a dance in Worcester in 1948. They were married April 13, 1949, in Montpelier.

George and Jean enjoyed traveling with Marjorie and Stephen to Montana and Alaska. The year of their 50th wedding anniversary, George and Jean traveled to Florida visiting family and friends along the way. In February of 2002, George took his first airplane flight to Florida with his granddaughter, Tonya.

George enjoyed having company. All of his many wonderful friends and neighbors stopping for tea or coffee would brighten his days.

George, along with his son, George Jr., and his grandson, Bruce, had a successful moose hunt in 2005.

George was predeceased by his wife, Jean, on Sept. 9, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Marjorie and her husband Stephen Herring of Worcester and Demis and her husband Larry T. Martin of Worcester; one son, George W. Richardson Jr. of Worcester; grandchildren Scott and Cindy Herring of Williamstown, Tonya and George Brett of Worcester, Jess and Joanne Herring of Worcester, Brad and Dain Herring of Barre Town, Lucas Herring and Krista Goulette of Barre, Melissa Martin of Reston, Va., and Bruce Martin of Mahopac, N.Y.; and great-grandchildren Miranda, Kendra, Kaylee, Alyssa, Desiree, Hunter, Rhor, Riley, Shaina, Ridge and Hannah.

George is also survived by one sister, Pauline Utton of Montpelier; one sister-in-law, Ella (Penny) Avakian of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; two brothers-in-law, Walter Bavier and his wife Irene of Bolton, Conn., and Raymond Bavier and his wife Karen of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. George had an extended family of friends and neighbors who called him Grampa or Uncle George.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. in the Worcester United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Worcester Mountain Cemetery at a later date. Calling hours will be held Thursday, Feb. 9, from 7-9 p.m. in the Barber & Lanier Funeral Service, 139 Main St., Montpelier. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester United Methodist Church, P.O.
