1839 - Worcester

Washington county. This town is situated 10 miles N. from Montpelier and 30 E. by S. from Burlington. First settled, 1797. Population, 1820, 44, and in 1830, 432. A branch of Onion river gives the town a good water power, and which is used for various purposes. Much of this township is mountainous, but there is some good land along the streams, and the highlands afford pasturage for cattle.
The New England Gazetteer containing descriptions of all the states, counties and towns in New England: also descriptions of the principal mountains, rivers lakes, capes, bays, harbors, islands and fashionable resorts within that territory. 1849 - Worcester
Washington Co. A branch of Winooski River gives this town a good water power, which is used for various purposes. Much of this township is mountainous ; but there is some good land along the stream, and the highlands afford good pasturage for cattle.

Boundaries. North by Elmore, east by Calais, south by Middlesex, and west by Stowe.

First Settlers. The settlement was commenced in 1797, by George Martin and John Ridlan, emigrants from Kennebec, Me. The town was organized March 3, 1803.

First Ministers. A Congregational Church was gathered here, in 1804. There are also societies of Freewill Baptists and Methodists.

Productions of the Soil. Wheat, 883 bushels ; Indian corn, 1,386 bushels ; potatoes, 3,305 bushels ; hay, 415 tons ; wool, 267 pounds.

Distances. Eight miles north from Montpelier, and thirty-one east from Burlington.

1878 - The Murder Case in Worcester, Vt.
ARREST OF THE SUPPOSED GUILTY PARTY— THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT POINT TO HIS GUILT.

The vicinity of Worcester, a place some ten miles from Montpelier, in a fever of excitement over the murder of a half-breed Canadian Indian named Will Muccurmuck. The circumstances of the case are as follows: Muccurmuck was Jast seen Wednesday last, in company with Royal Carr, a hard character of Calais, who once served o sentence of ten years in State Prison for murder, On Friday, Carr told his cousin, Chester Carr, that Muccurmuck was up in the woods, on so-called Harkins’ Pond Hill, in
Calais, and guessed he would stay there. Chester Carr then notified the neighbors, and they went into the woods and found Muccurmuck dead, and covered with boughs, with three revolver shots in his left side and one in the head and a heavy charge of shot in the right shoulder. The face and

1898 - Fatal Bicycle Accident.
RUTLAND, Vt., Sept.1. - Philip Buck, aged fifteen, of Worcester, Vt., met with an accident yesterday morning that cost him his life. He was a novice at bicycle riding. While he was crossing a bridge over the North Branch, near Worcester Village, his wheel came in contact with the stay girder and he was thrown into the river bed some twelve feet below. Buck died from internal injuries later in the day.

1901 - Worcester Suicide
Worcester, Vt. Feb. 7. - Nathaniel Hersey, one of Worcester’s, oldest residents, committed suicide yesterday afterhanging himself with a rope in
the hallway of the house in which he lived. The community is very much stirred up over the matter and today it is the talk of the town. Much conjecture has been made regarding the cause for his act and it is the general belief that during a fit of despondency he went to the hall and committed the deed.

He was a man 70 years of age and for the past few years had been troubled more or less with a cancer. About a year ago he had to leave off active work and since that time has been confined to the house.

The scene of the affair is a good sized farm house of two tenements. In one of these Mr. and Mrs. Hersey lived, and it was in the hall way of this part of the house that Mr. Hersey hung himself. In
the other part of the house live Mrs. Mary Hall, their daughter, and her husband.

1901 - Drowned by slipping under a log
WORCESTER, Vt., April 12. - John W. Utton, employed as a log driver by C.C. Putnam & Son at Worcester, was drowned about 10:30 yesterday morning by slipping under a log at Reed's Falls, about four miles above Worcester village.

He was one of a party of men who were working on the log drive of C.C. Putnam & Son, and while helping to pull out some logs which had become jammed at the foot of the falls, slipped and fell into about 30 feet of water.

A searching party of 50 were out yesterday afternoon but the body could not be found. This morning it was seen in a whirlpool below the dam and was taken out. It is said that after Mr. Utton was drowned some logs went over the dam and some of the people in Worcester believe the body was struck by these logs.

A brother-in-law of the dead man saw his body come up once after he had fallen in but he could not save him.

The drowned man was 25 years of age and unmarried. He was a son of William Utton, of Worcester, and well known in town. ... Read MORE...
