1901 - Bath Tub Famine is the Latest. Plumbers Are Entirely Unable to Supply the Demand. Extensive Building Operations Cause the Scarcity.
There is a crying need of bath tubs in Cleveland. In fact a bath tub famine has been in progress in this city for some time and also in almost every city in the United States, where building operations are booming.
The demand is far in excess of the supply and the plumbing supply houses have now given up any hope they had previously entertained of being able to fill the orders which have been pouring in on them since early spring.
The rather unique famine is seriously delaying the completion of a great many residences and apartment houses. Customers willing to pay almost any price for a nice white enameled bath tub appear daily at the supply houses of the city, fret and fume, but all to no avail, for the bath tubs simply cannot be secured.
The older generation can dilate on what ruddy health was secured in the olden days by arising early in the morning and taking a splendid bath in a foot tub or a bowl after breaking the ice in the water barrel with a candlestick, but these happy reflections will not appease those who demand the modern bath tub...
