The fire, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, quickly spread through the surrounding area, engulfing the town and surrounding forests. The firestorm was so intense that it created its own weather system, with witnesses reporting tornado-like winds and fire whirls.

The fire's impact was catastrophic, claiming the lives of more than 450 people and leaving thousands homeless. It destroyed much of the town of Hinckley and several nearby communities, as well as vast areas of forest.
