1879 - Caught Defrauding the Government

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 10. - Samuel J. Tilden and his brother, Henry A Tilden, proprietors of an extract and drug manufactory at New Lebanon, N. Y., are in trouble for defrauding the Government out of a large amount of internal revenue. Several days ago internal revenue officials at Chicago seized a number of packages containing bottles of "cromo-chlorlum," put up by the Tilden house, which had not been properly stamped. Since this seizure, the Internal Revenue Bureau has directed an examination of similar packages at St. Louis, New Orleans and other points, which has resulted in seizure, in all those cities where these goods have been examined. Mr. Tilden's nephew, a son of Henry A Tilden, came here a day or two ago, to get the Internal Revenue Bureau to stop further seizures and to compromise the matter, and suppress its further publicity. The services of ex-Senator Barnum, of Connecticut, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, were obtained, and he went before Commissioner Raum to get the case settled, but failed to accomplish that object. The Internal Revenue authorities here have no doubt that the Government has been defrauded out of a large sum of money in a systematic manner by the Tildens' not stamping the goods manufactured by them as required by law.
