1869 - FLIGHT OF AN ALLEGED INCENDIARY

News
Among those doing business in the block of buildings which was destroyed by fire at Tarrytown on the 30th ult., was a baker named Philip Wigand, who, it appears, for its full value. Since the fire disclosures of a suspicious nature, regarding Wigand's knowledge of its origin, having been made an oath before Justice Mann, that official last Monday issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of arson. After being conducted to the office of the Justice by a constable it was suggested to the accused, by the presiding officer, that he secure the aid of counsel to defend him, and to this end the examination was postponed until the following day. Through some strange interpretation of justice, Wigand was allowed to go on his own recognizance, the result being that he has fled the village, and up to yesterday afternoon had not been seen.
