1860 - COLLISION ON THE HUDSON RIVER RAILROAD - ONE PASSENGER KILLED AND TEN OR FIFTEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED.
A serious collision - the result, apparently, of carelessness - occurred about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon on the Hudson River Railroad, some two miles north of Tarrytown. The Albany Express train was run into by the Sing Sing way-train, the rear car completely demolished, and the one next to it badly broken.

It appears from a statement made by a passenger, who was in the last car but one at the time of the accident, that the Albany Express train was standing still when the collision occurred, having stopped for the purpose of making repairs to the engine. It is also worthy of note that this was the third stoppage made for the same purpose after the train left Albany.

What the nature of the difficulty with the engine was our reporter could not ascertain. Unfortunately the last stoppage was made immediately after turning a sharp curve, which entirely shut the disabled train from the sight of any train that might follow it.

The Sing Sing way-train came down at the usual time... Read MORE...

1869 - FLIGHT OF AN ALLEGED INCENDIARY
Among those doing business in the block of buildings which was destroyed by fire at Tarrytown on the 30th ult., was a baker named Philip Wigand, who, it appears, for its full value. Since the fire disclosures of a suspicious nature, regarding Wigand's knowledge of its origin, having been made an oath before Justice Mann, that official last Monday issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of arson. After being conducted to the office of the Justice by a constable it was suggested to the accused, by the presiding officer, that he secure the aid of counsel to defend him, and to this end the examination was postponed until the following day. Through some strange interpretation of justice, Wigand was allowed to go on his own recognizance, the result being that he has fled the village, and up to yesterday afternoon had not been seen.

1891 - DYNAMITE DISASTER - Frightful Explosion of Blasting Powder on the Hudson. -A Car Containing Thirty Laborers Blown of Atoms.
A flat car loaded with dynamite and drawn by a construction engine was blown to atoms shortly before noon a few days ago, at a place about one and a quarter miles south of Tarrytown, N. Y., on the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. A gang of workmen, chiefly Italians, were on the car, and of the number thirteen were killed, ten were injured and five, on the day after the tragedy, were missing. It was thought that the bodies of the latter were thrown into the river. Efforts were made to recover them. The bodies of several of the dead Italians have neither been claimed nor identified. Some of the injured of the same nativity have been recognized. Three of the wounded were taken to a local hospital at Tarrytown; the rest were brought to Bellevue Hospital in New York City, where they are being properly cared for.

Had the explosion occurred while a heavily loaded passenger train was passing the work train the loss of life might have been still more appalling. No trustworthy... Read MORE...

1910 - ROCKEFELLER, JR., FIGHTS FIRE. In Charge of His Own Hose Company at a Pocantico Hills Blaze.
Special to The New York Times.

TARRYTOWN, N. Y., March 23. - Fire in the woods on the estate of John D. Rockefeller gained such headway this afternoon that the Rockefeller fire brigade, with jumper and hose, had to be rushed to the scene. It was followed by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and his wife in a carriage, who directed the men at their work. About twenty-five men were engaged in the fight, and it took several hours of hard work before Mr. Rockefeller decided that the blaze was out, and allowed the men to return home.

There were three fires on the estate to-day, and to-night all over Pocantico Hills there is a heavy cloud of smoke. The first fire occurred on the Rice farm this morning. This is in the Sleepy Hollow country. It was successfully fought and extinguished.

At 2 o'clock this afternoon the woods caught fire near the old Berkley Inn Hotel, and as a strong wind was blowing, it threatened to burn the place. The fire was so fierce that smoke came from it in volumes,... Read MORE...
