San Jose, July 3. - Shortly before 8 o'clock this morning the large and handsome Elmonte Hotel at Los Gatos was discovered to be afire, and in spite of the efforts of the fire department it was a heap of ashes within an hour. The fire originated from a defective flue, and when the flames were discovered the inner side of the entire roof was ablaze. The manager, S. H. JOHNSON, and the guests managed to save the most of their personal belongings and the furniture. The owner of the hotel, W. W. GRAY of this city, had left only an hour before for his office here. The loss is $25,000, partly covered by insurance.
