Los Gatos, Santa Clara, CA

Los Gatos is one of Santa Clara County’s oldest communities. In 1840, the Mexican government granted a land patent for a 6,600 acre rancho to Sebastian Peralta and Jose Hernandez. Los Gatos was originally named La Rinconada de Los Gatos (Cat’s Corner) by early settlers due to the screams of mountain lions prowling in the night. "The Old Stone Mill" - erected 1850. First Building in Los Gatos, California.

"One of the oldest landmarks in Los Gatos and vicinity, the Old Stone mill, is being torn down as it is now considered unsafe. The big quake of 1906 shattered it to a considerable extent, and the shake of a few weeks ago left is to badly damaged that it was deemed unwise to leave it standing longer, so the work of taking it down was commenced last Thursday morning. It will be taken down to the first story.

The early history of this well-known building is told...in 1888...

'The first building in this now thriving town was Forbes' mill and for many years the place was known by that name. This enterprise was begun by James Alex Forbes, in 1850, but it was not completed until four years afterwards..."

San Jose, Cal., Oct. 13. - The most destructive fire in the history of Los Gatos occurred at an early hour this morning. The entire business section of the town was wiped out. The area covered by the fire is estimated at about four acres. Property variously estimated in value at from $100,000 to $150,000 was destroyed. A dozen or more business blocks, several manufactories, a livery stable, a church and many dwelling-houses were burned. The fire department was powerless to cope with the flames, which, fanned by a strong southerly breeze, stopped only when practically all the fuel at hand was exhausted.
