2010 Death of his brother

Leonard R. Wearne, 90, of Pennside, died Tuesday in the Mifflin Center, Shillington. He was the husband of Jessie Propst Wearne, who died May 29, 2009, and they had been married for 64 years.

Leonard was born in Akron, Ohio, on July 5, 1920, and was the son of the late Arthur and Carmella Charles Wearne. Leonard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Reading. He was a graduate of Blakely High School in 1938 and Temple University and Bloomsburg State Teachers College. Leonard began his teaching career in Mount Penn High School in 1968 and taught in the business education department for nine years. He then taught elementary school in Wyomissing Hills for three years, served as elementary principal at the Twin Valley School District, and as elementary principal in the Antietam School District. He was later curriculum director at Daniel Boone School District. He retired while serving as assistant superintendent at the Tulpehocken Area School District. He served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are a brother, Clifford Wearne, and wife, Alice, Afton, N.Y., and their son, Jim; a nephew, David Moore, Clarks Summit; and a niece, Judy Albert, Dalton.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Robert E. Decker Funeral Home, 702 River St., Peckville. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery in Montdale. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 37 S. Fifth St., Reading, PA 19602.
