Groveland, a post-township in Essex co., Massachusetts, on the S. side of Merrimack river, about 25 miles N. by E. from Boston. Population, 1286.

Groveland Massachusetts, 1890
Groveland is a handsome town on the south bank of the Merrimack River, and in the northerly part of Essex County, 34 miles north of Boston, with which it connects by the Haverhill Branch of the Danvers and Newburyport line of the Boston and Maine Railroad. It is bounded on the north by Haverhill and West Newbury; on the northeast by the latter; on a small space at the east by Newbury; on the southeast and south by Georgetown; on a short southwestern line by the northern part of Boxford; and on the northwest line by Bradford and Haverhill. From the latter it is separated by the Merrimack, across which, at Groveland village, is an excellent iron bridge 800 feet in length.

The assessed area is 5,230 acres, which includes small scattered tracts of forest aggregating 1, 195 acres, and composed mostly of pine and oak. 1895 - Groveland
Groveland, a post-village of Essex co., Mass., on the S. bank of the Merrimac River, in Groveland township, and on the Boston & Maine Railroad (Newburyport division), 34 miles N. of Boston, and 3 miles E. of Haverhill. It has an academy, 2 churches, common schools, and a newspaper office. The township contains another village called South Groveland. Pop. of the township, 2191.

1900 - WORST IN YEARS.
Haverhill, April 26. - The R. H. Page building, at Groveland, where the town offices were located, was burned to the ground this morning. Before the fire was gotten under control damage aggregating $20,000 was done.

The cause of the fire is unknown. It was the worst blaze that has occurred for years in the town. The building was situated near the end of the Haverhill-Groveland bridge, and was the leading business block. When discovered the flames were burning briskly in a closet in the barber shop of Henry Howard on the second floor, and had worked their way along through the partitions.

The building on the ground floor was divided into three stores, occupied by Thomas H. Renion as a street car waiting room and cigar store; C. P. Boynton, grocer and R. H. Page, the owner of the building, who managed another grocery at the southeasterly end of the structure. The second floor was occupied by Henry Howard, barber, the Public Library and the town offices.
