Bloomfield, in Hartford County, is located in the northern portion of central Connecticut. Its border is formed on the north by the Farmington River and on the west by Talcott Mountain. Originally land of the Poquonocks, the area was first settled in 1660 as part of Windsor, organized as the Parish of Wintonbury in 1736 from the towns of Windsor, Farmington, and Simsbury, and finally incorporated as the town of Bloomfield in May of 1835. The early economy of Bloomfield was agriculturally based, mostly in shade tobacco, until it became a densely populated suburb of Hartford, as it remains to this day.

"St. Thomas Seminary was founded in 1897 by Bishop Michael Tierney, the sixth Bishop of Hartford. The original Seminary was located at 352 Collins Street in Hartford, in what was once the Chinese College. It opened its doors on September 7, 1897. Bishop Tierney appointed the Right Reverend John Synnott as the first President of St. Thomas.[2] Due to the increasing enrollment, and limited space, it became necessary to find a larger space. Bishop John J. Nilan had the cornerstone laid for the new building in 1928. 1834 - The Oliver Filley House was built in Bloomfield.
Captain Oliver Filley built the house for his son, Jay Humphrey Filley, and Jay’s wife, Julia Newberry. Oliver’s father purchased the land on which the house still resides, leaving it to Oliver and Oliver’s mother upon his death in 1795. Oliver lived on the property when he married his wife, Annis Humphrey, in 1805.

It derived its name from the circumstance of the parish being formed from Windsor, Farmington, and Simsbury; the name Win-ton-bury being a part of the name of each of those towns. It was incorporated into a town in 1835. The inhabitants enjoy a fine soil, and cultivate it with great industry, producing large crops of grass and grain, with an abundance of choice fruit. It lies about six miles N. from Hartford. Population, about 1,400.

BLOOMFIELD was incorporated in 1835, and consisted of Wintonbury Parish and a portion of Poquonnock Society in Windsor. In 1840 the town received an addition of a part of Simsbury known as Scotland Parish. As now constituted, it is bounded on the north and east by Windsor, on the south by Hartford, and on the west by Simsbury and Avon, and averages four miles in length and in breadth. On the east border a forest a mile aud a half broad extends the whole length of the township from north to south, and on the west is the range of hills called Talcott Mountain. Through this broad, gently undulating valley run three large brooks, which unite in the south part to form Woods River; and this, meeting another small river in the southwest part of Hartford, forms Park River, which flows through the city and empties into the Connecticut.
