Santa Claus, or Father Christmas, lives in the northern part of Finland called Korvatunturi, or Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle. People from all over the world send letters to Santa Claus in Finland. There’s even a theme park called Christmas Land in the north of Finland, close to where Santa is said to live. worldholidaytraditions.com
One of the most popular New Year's traditions in Finland is the casting of tin. Everyone gets a small piece of tin, cast in the shape of a miniature horseshoe, a traditional symbol of good luck. The horseshoe is melted and the liquid metal poured quickly in a bucket of cold water, making it harden into a more or less irregular-shaped, solid clump.
The shape and shadow of the resulting cast are examined and interpreted to predict the various future events of the coming year. Different shapes have different meaning, promising either good luck or health, wealth, happiness, sorrow, sickness, etc. If the cast breaks down to pieces, it is a sign of "bad luck". dlc.fi

Finland, a country of Europe, forming a ? of the empire of Russia, whose sovereign is Grand Duke of Finland. It is bounded N. by Norway, W. by Sweden and the Gulf of Bothnia, S. by the Gulf of Finland; length, from N. to S., 650 miles; breadth, near the centre, only 112 miles, but towards the S., where it is greatest, 370 miles; area, 144,222 square miles. 1900 - FINLAND'S STAMPS VANISH - Amusing Method to Which the Stubborn Finns Have Resorted to Keep Them Current
Finland is no longer a member of the international postal union, as by an imperial Russian ukase the Finnish postage stamp is withdrawn from use, and the Russian postage stamp substituted. While the Finnish postage stamp until a few weeks ago had no value in the eyes of stamp collectors, it has now at one jump reached to the head of the list, and will probably be the most valuable in the stamp collector's albums. The Finns are of course furious against Russia for this additional demonstration of the Bear to blot their country off the map of the world.
But the Finns are by nature a stubborn people, and the method they adopted o still compel the Russian authorities to forward letters with the Finnish postage stamp is amusing. Their correspondence they inclosed in an oridinary envelope, on which they place the Finnish postage stamp in the usual corner. The envelope was then inclosed in a thin transparent envelope, plainly showing the Finnish stamp. The outside envelope was then... Read MORE...
