Fairfield was chartered on August 18, 1763. The town was organized in March 1790 and the first town meeting was held on March 30, 1791.
Fairfield proved to be one of the biggest and best farming towns in Vermont. Its rolling hills are used for growing hay, corn, and pasture for dairy farms, along with the growing of maple trees for maple syrup production.
President Chester A. Arthur was born in Fairfield in 1829, and lived there for the first three years of his life. The reconstructed family home of the 21st President and the church where his father was preacher are located at the President Chester A. Arthur State Historic Site.

Franklin county. This town was first settled in 1789. It is well watered by Smithfield pond, Fairfield river, Black creek, and branches of Missisque river, and abounds in mill sites. Fairfield has a good strong soil and is generally suitable for cultivation. It is a pleasant place, with some trade and considerable manufactures. It produces good beef cattle and horses, and pastures about 7,000 sheep. Population, 1830, 2,270. Fairfield lies 45 miles N.W. from Montpelier, 27 N.N.E. from Burlington, and is bounded W. by St. Albans.

Franklin Co. Black Creek is a considerable stream, which issues from Metcalf Pond in Fletcher, and runs through this township, affording an excellent stand for mills. Fairfield River is a small stream, which, also, takes its rise in Fletcher, and passes through the town near its centre, affording several good mill privileges. These streams unite and fall into Missisco River in Sheldon. Smithfield Pond, lying in the westerly part of the town, is about three miles long and one and a half broad. At the outlet is an excellent stand for mills, and another on the same stream about two miles below. The township was originally covered principally with hard wood. The surface is uneven, but very little of it so broken as to be unfit for cultivation. The soil is generally good.
