1854 - Little Falls
Little Falls, or Rookton, a post-village in Rockton township, Herkimer county, New . York, on both sides of the Mohawk river, and on the Utica and Schenectady railroad, 76 miles W. N. W. from Albany. It is situated in a narrow and romantic valley. The river falls over rocky rapids, descending 42 feet in the course of three quarters of a mile, and furnishing great water-power. The Erie canal here passes by a deep cut in the solid rock, through a picturesque defile, 2 miles in extent. Granite rocks rise on both sides of the valley, to the height of about 600 feet. The village contains churches of five denominations, a bank, 2 newspaper offices, and manufactories of machinery, paper, woollen goods, flour, &c. The feeder of the canal crosses the river by a handsome aqueduct, with an arch of 70 feet span. Population in 1853, estimated at 3000.

1885 - A WEST SHORE TRAIN SINKS IN A SWAMP NEAR LITTLE FALLS. The Wife Of Assemblyman CHAS. PRATT of Rochester Killed - Three Other Passengers Seriously Injured.
A terrible and fatal accident occurred on the West Shore railroad shortly after midnight Monday, just above what is called "the Big Branch," situated 1 1/ 4 miles west of Little Falls station and near where the passenger and freight trains collided a few weeks ago. The only cause known for the accident is a washout, which has done its terrible work well.

The accident happened to through passenger train No. 57, westward bound, which left Coeymans at 10:15 last night drawn by engine No. 42. It was running at a moderate rate of speed. Upon reaching the point mentioned all except the locomotive suddenly sunk to the ditch below, some 25 or 30 feet, into a swamp. The tender was completely turned around and headed east and three coaches and sleepers jumped or rather telescoped the tender, one sleeper striking about in the centre and lodged there. The other sleepers and coaches were hurled into the ditch.

Little Falls, a post-village of Herkimer co., N.Y., on both sides of the Mohawk River, on the Erie Canal, and on the New York Central Railroad, 73 1/ 2 miles W.N.W. of Albany, and 21 1/ 2 miles E. by S. of Utica. The river here passes through a narrow rocky gorge, and falls about 44 feet the course of two-thirds of a mile, affording abundant water-power. The dwellings are built on steep declivities, commanding a view of picturesque scenery. Little Falls contains 8 churches, a bank, 2 or 3 newspaper offices, an academy, a cotton-factory, 2 paper-mills, a starch-factory, 2 Woollen-mills, an axe-factory, 2 knitting-mills, a foundry, &c. The village is mostly in Little Falls township, but partly in Manheim, Pop. (1890) 8783; of township, 7512.

Littlefalls contains machine-shops, a manufactory of knitting-machinery, a tannery, bicycle- work.'*, knitting-, woollen- and paper-mills, etc. Pop. in 1900, 10,381.
