Winston, a thriving post-village, capital of Forsyth co., North Carolina, 120 miles W. by N. from Raleigh, is separated from Salem by a single street. It was laid out in 1850, when the county was organized.

1924 - June 24 - Six men at a rock quarry south of Winston-Salem, NC, sought shelter from a thunderstorm.
The structure chosen contained a quantity of dynamite. Lightning struck a near-by tree causing the dynamite to explode. The men were killed instantly.

1968 - SIX ARE KILLED IN CRASH IN WINSTON-SALEM AREA.
Winston - Salem (AP) - Six people were killed Saturday when a new twin-engine Piper Navajo plane crashed and burned 14 miles northwest of Winston-Salem.
The pilot, copilot and four passengers died immediately.
The pilot was KARL KURBJUN, JR., 46, of Roanoke, Va., a vice president of Aeroflite Corp. of Roanoke, which owned the plane.
IRVING E. CRAIG, 40, of Winston - Salem, a pilot for R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., was co-pilot.
Passengers were CRAIG'S wife, HATTIE, 41, and son, DOUGLAS, 4, and two employes of Central Piedmont Aero, BOBBY COMPTON and LEWIS DUNCAN, all of Winston - Salem. Central Piedmont is a subsidiary of Piedmont Aviation.
The pilot had taken off from Smith Reynolds airport and the plane was circling over a farm near Pfafftown, when it went into a spin, witnesses said. A man's watch in the wreckage was stopped at 12:15 p.m., the apparent time of the impact.
